Let’s delve into her world—a world where color, line, and mark-making dance harmoniously and where the human figure becomes an expressive canvas.

The Artistic Odyssey

Maria’s artistic odyssey began early. As a child, she was perpetually curious, always making or learning something new. Her mother’s gift of Saturday art lessons ignited her passion for painting. Maria’s formal education at the Limerick School of Art & Design in Ireland further fueled her artistic fire. Four blissful years immersed in Fine Art Painting laid the foundation for her expressive journey.

But Maria’s path diverged.

She became an Art Teacher, a role that allowed her to explore diverse projects and research artists beyond her own practice. Yet, the itch for personal creativity persisted. Australia beckoned—an opportunity to paint, to breathe life into her visions. There, she met her now-husband, a Swede, and their love story intertwined with her artistic evolution.

From Teaching to Independence

Seven years as an Art Teacher and Head of Aesthetics followed. But Maria yearned for more. The repetitive lessons no longer satisfied her creative hunger. In 2021, she took a leap—quitting her teaching job to explore new horizons. A Digital Creative program opened doors to illustration and pattern design. Maria’s studio became her sanctuary, shared with inspiring creatives Astrid Wilson and Mandy Sade.

The Creative Alchemy

Maria’s process defies convention. Conversations, books, or spontaneous marks on canvas spark her ideas. She thrives on experimentation, believing that the best paintings emerge when not overthought. Routine and discipline, inspired by Gerhard Richter, guide her. Early mornings in the studio, heavy tasks tackled first, and then—painting. A zone of thought-free creation, where lines and colors flow freely.

Maria’s fascination lies in the human figure—the imperfect lines, broken marks, and serendipitous mistakes. She draws with a long, thin hog hair brush, solving problems as she paints. Imperfections become the work’s essence, leaving blemishes that tell stories. Color, too, plays a pivotal role. Harmonious or contrasting palettes evoke emotions, vibrating off one another.

Her artistic universe extends to fashion. Her hand-painted patterns adorn cowboy scarves, a wearable extension of her paintings. The intersection of art and fashion tantalizes her—mark making, image creation, and the thrill of seeing her designs worn by others.

Aethos Sardinia’s Influence

The azure sea, rolling hills, and tranquil ambiance of Aethos Sardinia seeped into Maria’s process of creating the hotel’s bedroom artwork. The colors, the calmness—they resonated. Whether it was the sculptures, the flowers, or the human form, inspiration bloomed. The blue sea and the surrounding plants whispered their secrets into her brushstrokes.

Maria Murphy’s art breathes life into Aethos Sardinia—a celebration of community, nostalgia, and the art of living well. Past and present intertwine here, inviting guests to unwind, rejuvenate, and indulge. As the sun sets over the Mediterranean, Maria’s strokes continue their dance, echoing the timeless beauty of this coastal haven.
